« I'm Interested in history, current affairs and cultural identity. I'm inspired by my immediate surroundings. I often turn my attention towards architecture in order to examine the identity of the places I visit. »

Alicja Dobrucka is a Polish photographer who lives and works between London and Mumbai. Cultural identity is an integral motive to her work, besides the idea of cultural transfer, where cultures meet, merge and create something new out of such encounters.

Portrait of Alicja Dobrucka

Moving Closer

Intuitively drawn to working in a documentary manner, Dobrucka has a deep level of involvement with her subject. In her explorations of countries such as Poland, India, Israel and Italy, she favours architecture, as it allows her to observe the immediate environment of her subjects and the identity of these places. Dobrucka takes her time to capture the right moment. It is for this reason that she prefers the natural restriction of working with analogue, as it forces her to concentrate more.

Touching the Souls of Many

“I like you, I like you a lot” was a deeply personal body of work, yet it has the capacity to resonate with many. The work responded to the loss of Dobrucka’s 13-year-old brother, Maks, who tragically drowned during a scout trip in May 2008. Dobrucka’s 42-photo project is not only a heart-breaking study of family bereavement but, in search of her brother’s presence, his hangouts, his friends, her work is also a study of post-communism youth in Poland.

Deutsche Success

Alicja Dobrucka is an artist of international acclaim. She was awarded the prestigious Deutsche Bank Fine Art Award and Grant and was nominated with the WW Solo Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally, notably at the Tate, Liverpool, and the 54th Venice Biennale.
