Baudouin Mouanda

Born in 1981, Baudouin Mouanda is a Congolese photographer. He works with numerous international newspapers and exhibits regularly in various African and European countries. His work is characterized by the many exuberant personalities he photographs with care and precision as well as his investment in documenting the Congo's under-represented communities.

A photographer of life

Baudouin grew up in Brazzaville and started photography at the age of thirteen.  Attracted by the play of light and perspective, he is passionate about subjects that are thought provoking.  His photographs are real chronicles of life in the Congolese capital such as his best-known series on the S.A.P.E. (the Society of Ambient and Elegant People) which pays homage to these dandies who dress in luxurious suits of shimmering colours.

An African Ambassador

Baudouin Mouanda wants to make a contribution towards showing a different aspect of Africa whilst still remaining as a privileged witness of its contemporary history.  He has the ability to mix purposeful themes with true artistic sensitivity and a certain sense of humour.  He has worked on an exhibition regarding « the Sequels of War » which was shown at the Biennale in Bamako.  His series “Pavements of Knowledge” reveals the habit of secondary school students coming to do their homework under the street lights because the electricity at home has been cut off.

An award-winning Francophone photographer

In 2013, he won the silver medal at the 7th Francophone Games in Nice.  Between two exhibitions, different residences or commissions, « Photouin », as he is known, continues to return to Brazzaville again and again to rediscover his inspiration.
